BEGINNINGS
Time & Family…
The family farm has had a long and illustrious association
with Australian folklore and our family connection to the
land is just as long. Our Muir family has been connected to
the land for six generations in Western Australia, being the
first settlers to bring Angus cattle to this state in the
1890's. The path was set for the breed to have a foot hold
this state but it was not until a long time after that the
angus breed started to dominate the herds of Western Australia
to being the most prolific breed in the Agricultural farmland.
It was Graham Muir as a young lad of thirteen years that
decided to purchase his first Angus cows in 1954 and the Mordallup
Angus Herd had its beginnings. Over the following years the
herd slowly gained momentum and by 1969, the herd made its
biggest and most significant step into the Iimelight by purchasing
one bull and several cows from New Zealand. This propelled
the Mordallup name to where it is today. The stud is still
run as a family interest with Graham and Gail Muir along with
their son and daughter in-law Mark and Geraldine Muir operating
the business.
Remember family values are always important.
IN THE PADDOCK
Where things happen…
At Mordallup Angus we believe in a simple but sound, balanced
and complete breeding program to enhance the management and
marketing of our stud. To the stage where our family has built
up an elite herd with a huge reputation since its beginning
with the first stud registration back in 1956. The herd now
comprises of over 400 registered cows.
Our breeding program is based on time-honoured traditions
combined with proven modern day breeding principles. That
has allowed us to advance our herd to the top of the breeding
spectrum.
All retained females are given equal opportunity to express
their potential within the herd. By comparing them and their
progeny against one another for selected and sensible traits
this gives the added advantage in identifying the true performers
within the herd and only those who do are then retained.
This then turns into generations of tried and proven genetics
that are unmatched while still keeping the desired traits
that are synonymous with the Angus breed.
Our management program is designed to allow our cow herd
to perform under normal commercial farming practices which
allows the desirable traits to shine out such as early gestation,
calving case, good growth, do-ability, constitution, softness
and volume of muscle, fertility, early sexual maturity and
mothering ability. This includes all heifers having the opportunity
to calve down as two-year olds.
The herd is only raised on natural pasture conditions that
are normal for our region and are fed minimal hay during the
stress periods of late Autumn / early Winter. No grain feeding
is allowed.
All young bulls and sire battery are raised under the same
conditions as our cowherd. This allows the most single important
traits that, Mordallup is known for, to shine: constitution
& do-ability.
Our marketing program is geared to the commercial farmer
and their needs for improving the economical traits that are
so vital for them to remain in business.
TODAY
It's happening now...
The progressive stockman of today is demanding more and more
details in order to select the right choice for their next
herd sire to build or improve their cowherd. The decision
making process is made easy with Mordallup's Superior Stacked
Pedigree's and balanced EBV's and the knowledge that we can
truly make the difference in any herd.
Every year in February we hold our annual on-property "Business
Bull Sale" auction. Selling the Elite bulls of the Drop
as rising two-year olds. All bulls are naturally raised in
normal pastoral conditions. No grain feeding is required as
this masks the true potential of what the bull can naturally
grow out to.
Remember "constitution & do-ability " are paramount
to us.
Private treaty sale bulls are available all year round.
We annually offer groups, of weaned stud heifers for private
treaty. These groups generally become available in summer
or autumn of the year after they are born. Special selections
are sometimes available from time to time.
Calving takes place during Autumn while mating is the winter
job.
We welcome clients and visitors anytime of the year and it
is always a pleasure to discuss breeding and selection philosophies.
THE FUTURE
Its exciting, its practical and we're part of it ...
Remember, we are continually striving to increase the breeding
value of our herd to better serve the needs of the industry.
In doing this we all know there is no ultimate bull (as we
all might wish) so instead we try to use bulls that can improve
traits and uniformity across the herd. So that you as a cattleman
can source genetics with confidence and improve and increase
the value of your herd also.
We have never based our herd on single trait selection,
but rather a combination of balanced valued traits, well proven
pedigrees and structural soundness.
It is our philosophy that the maximum production of a herd
is maintainable in a sensible fashion so not to lose sight
of what is required in the entire beef chain. The fine and
delicate balance that we take to ensure that we are breeding
for the future is a paramount importance to us.
So join us and be part of it-
